Our Review of the Best Exercise Bike of 2019

Here we go…

Best Overall Exercise Bike

Best Portable Exercise Bike

Affordability - 98%
User Capacity - 97%
Portability - 100%
Resistance - 100%

One thing makes the Desk Cycle Exerciser standout – its design is novel. Apparently, we don’t get to see an under desk exercise bike every day. We got our hands on the Desk Cycler and respect for it soared high. The following are the reasons why we crowned it the best exercise bike of the year.

First, we’d like to point out that portability isn’t a factor many consider when buying an exercise bike. However, you’ll appreciate the Desk Cycle’s miniature size and weight especially if you have missed your workouts because you had too much paperwork to do in the office. As a matter of fact, this awesome under desk exercise bike weighs just 23 lbs. This makes it convenient for you to grab it when you intend to spend more time at your table working. Little wonder it is also dubbed the best portable exercise bike.

It’s comfortable to use, to say the least. Also, it feels firm and steady when it’s in use. It feels quite similar to the MagneTrainer-ER Mini Exercise Bike – this one belongs under the desk too. Having owned the MagneTrainer for some months, one of our team members commented on the better workout feeling offered by the Desk Cycle Exercise Bike.

The Desk Cycle exercise bike offers 8 different resistance levels. This is exactly the same with the other exercise bikes on our review list. The magnetic resistance feature ensures that your workouts are pretty smooth. It is designed to be used when sitting although it has a maximum user weight of about 300 lbs.

We tested the white model which is available in two options – one with an adjustable pedal and the other with a fixed pedal. Both are the same, the pedal being the only differences. There’s a small display available to provide you with the important details of your workout such as speed, time, distance, calories burned etc.

While it was in use, we barely heard any noise from the machine. This means that even your boss wouldn’t know that you’re working out at work. As small as the machine is, it features a smooth and effectively weighted flywheel.

The ProGear foldable magnetic upright exercise bike is undeniably the cheapest yet strong exercise bike. It basically sports a simple design, but that doesn’t make it basic in any way whatsoever.

From the product manual, we were able to deduce that the ProGear exercise bike was designed for people who weigh below 220 lbs. That’s what to expect since it’s touted as the best budget exercise bike. Before our team member climbed unto it to test it, we had him check his weight again on a weighing balance. Satisfied, we proceeded to unfold the bike.

Its compact, to say the least. Without wasting any time, our test guy hopped onto it. Honestly, we really didn’t like the fact that it spotted a miniature LCD screen. In our opinion, the screen is not fit for such a machine – it displays only one workout data at a time. We’re quite sure ProGear could have done better whilst keeping the cost of the machine down. The screen displays a handful of data including time, speed, distance, and calories burned.

We liked how comfortable and firm the pedals on the ProGear felt. They are designed as one-size-fits-all. Another member of our testing team slipped his feet and it fit nicely. However, if you have quite large feet, it will not fit you properly.

Also, the handlebars felt firm and sturdy to the grip. Inbuilt heart pulse monitors come handy for monitoring one’s heart rate. There are 8 resistance levels to choose from – each offering a tough workout challenge.

View Main Features / Pros & Cons

Main Features

  • 8 resistance levels.
  • Heart rate monitor as well as strong handlebars.
  • Comfortable pedals.
  • Maximum weight capacity of 220 lbs.
  • Miniature LCD screen.

  • The 8 resistance levels are enough to keep you challenged as you workout. Thus you end up burning more calories.
  • Heart rate monitors are there to help you keep track of your heart rate.
  • The pedals feel comfortable and fit various leg sizes.
  • Its 220 lbs weight is enough to support moderately sized individuals.

  • The small LCD screen is a major turn off.

Best Recumbent Exercise Bike

Best Recumbent Exercise Bike

Resistance - 100%

Before the end of the article, we’ll explain the various types of exercise bikes available. Prior to that, we take a look at the Marcy Recumbent exercise bike which we selected as the best recumbent exercise bike. Selecting the Marcy recumbent exercise bike from the long list of bikes available on the market was tough. This is primarily due to the fact that the bike stands out with stellar qualities.

Marcy equipped this recumbent bike with 8 resistance levels each bringing its own challenges to the workout table. This is in addition to the strong frame the bike is hinged upon. The frame is strong enough to support individuals weighing about 300lbs.

One of the things that will make you fall in love with this recumbent bike is its adjustable seat with backrest. When was the last time you had your back up against a comfortable seat whilst exercising? You can’t remember, can you? Well, the seats on the Marcy recumbent exercise bike are totally the best – a round of applause for them, please. Beside the seat are the handlebars which feel firm to the grip.

The Marcy recumbent bike allows you to make adjustments to suit your personal preferences. Aside from adjusting the seat, you can also adjust the machine’s length from 40 to 49 inches. Great leap, if we must say. This arguably makes it an ideal bike for homes with individuals of different sizes who use an exercise bike. Adjusting the length is as easy as pulling out a pin, pushing the bike to the desired length and returning the safety pin back into the hole.

Unfortunately, we didn’t find a pulse monitor on the machine. So, if you were expecting to see one, sorry, you won’t find any. The LCD screen is pretty much basic – as with the models we reviewed above. Your workout data is displayed on the screen. Below the LCD screen is the resistance adjustment knob so you can easily change the bike’s resistance.

Best Magnetic Exercise Bike

Best Magnetic Exercise Bike

Affordability - 97%
User Capacity - 97%
Portability - 97%
Resistance - 100%

With the ability to support weights of up to 300 lbs, the Exerpeutic magnetic exercise bike is our top choice for this category. Let’s find out why it made it to our review list.

The Exerpeutic exercise bike lacks the comfy seats with a backrest as seen on the Marcy Recumbent bike. However, this doesn’t impede its performance, at least, we are sure of that. The seat feels quite strong as the machine’s frame gives you the desired support.

Given its stylish design and price, we didn’t expect much in terms of features from the bike. We weren’t surprised when we saw it had only 8 resistance levels. Truth be told, most of the exercise bikes on the market have only 8 resistance levels. Away from that, the Exerpeutic bike is adjustable and can fit individuals of varying heights – between 5” and 6”. The bike also comes with a pulse monitor, unlike the Marcy bike which is in the same price range.

One thing we didn’t like was the fact that out of the box, we had to screw the bike tightly by ourselves. Although we expected to screw some bolts and nuts together, we didn’t expect to screw all. This didn’t stop us from enjoying a quick ride on the bike for a couple of hours as our testers meticulously checked the machine.

There’s a miniature LCD screen on the bike. It keeps you up to speed with the distance, time, pulse, as well as speed and calories burned.

View Main Features / Pros & Cons

  • The bike is adjustable
  • Small LCD screen with nicely placed one-touch buttons.
  • Supports users with weights of up to 300 lbs.

  • You can adjust the bike to suit your height if you are up to 6” tall.
  • To intensify your workout, simply increase the resistance all through 8 different levels.

  • Quite a handful of bolts and screws to tighten after unboxing the bike.

The Exerpeutic Gold 500 exercise bike seems like a higher version of the magnetic model we reviewed above. There are many differences between both exercise bikes. In the lines below, we shared our hands-on experience with the Gold 500 XLS upright exercise bike.

First, the bike is designed to support people who weigh up to 400 lbs. That’s a major leap from the 300 lbs we’re used to seeing on other exercise bike models. The frame is made from durable heavy-duty steel. This, in turn, accounts for the bikes bike’s weight and its ability to support people weighing 400 lbs. The bike’s design is pretty simple. Perhaps, that is the reason why it is a foldable machine. You save a great deal of space when the bike isn’t in use in your home.

In addition to this, the Exerpeutic Gold 500 XLS exercise bike is adjustable. It can be adjusted to suit individuals as tall as 6’5” tall. The handlebars on the bike are firm and feel good to the grip. However, the same cannot be said for the seats. The sits are large enough but they aren’t outrightly comfortable and could use some extra padding. This would be beneficial for people who work out for long hours.

Everything else about the bike is pretty much similar to the other bikes. The LCD screen is a tad bigger than the bikes we’ve reviewed so far, but it’s not the biggest anyways. It displays the calories burned, pulse, speed, distance, and time. As expected, the exercise bike sports 8 different resistance levels for increasing workout intensities.

View Main Features / Pros & Cons

Main Features

  • Adjustable to for people with heights 5” to 6’5”.
  • LCD screen for data display.
  • Increased weight capacity of 400 lbs.

  • The exercise bike can support your height even if you’re 6’5” tall and weigh 400 lbs.

  • Getting more out of your workout is easy. Simply turn the adjustment knob to select any of the 8 resistance levels.
  • Monitor your pulse with the onboard pulse monitor.

  • Extra padding on the seats is necessary.

That name is a tad difficult to pronounce, but the features of the machine aren’t difficult to say. Say hello to the Feierdun exercise bike. It’s a combo bike, at least, that’s what we know by merely looking at the packaging. This bike is an upright bike with a magnetic resistance system. It fits our description for the best upright exercise bike. Here’s why…

It sports a super comfortable adjustable seat with backrest. The handlebars sit nicely by the sides of the seat. Did we mention that this seat is adjustable? Of course, the seats can be adjusted to accommodate people who are between 5” and 6” tall. It’s made of quality grade steel which is capable of supporting users who weigh up to 243lbs. The bike is foldable – although folding and unfolding is simply not our thing.

To add resistance to your workouts, you can set the desired resistance level using the adjustment knob. On the other hand, you keep up to date with your workout information as it is displayed on the screen. You can fit your mobile device (iPad, tablet, laptop, and phone) on the center console so you can enjoy your media content as you workout.

Having an exercise bike at home can save you a lot of stress. You don’t need to go to the gym if you don’t want to. Besides, you can do a lot of work whilst still exercising within the confines of your home. We picked the JOROTO indoor cycling bike trainer as our choice for the best exercise bike for homes.

The bike costs about one-third of a thousand yet it has several features which make it worth owning. First, it’s designed to support users who weigh up to 280lbs. A lot of home users certainly wouldn’t weight up to that. Nevertheless, it is always advisable to keep a weighing balance handy so everyone in the house can check their weight before getting on the machine. Furthermore, the bike has a 35lbs flywheel which ensures you have enough resistance to deal with during workouts.

We appreciate the fact that the bike has a 4-way adjustable seat. The seat can be adjusted forward, backward, up, and down. Certainly, it should feel comfortable to its users in your home as it did when we tested. Furthermore, the handlebars are adjustable in contrast to the fixed handlebars we saw in some bikes in the course of our review. It will interest you to know that the handlebars have a dual function; the upper handlebar is useful for shoulder workouts while the lower bar is great for waist workouts.

The JOROTO exercise bike comes with 8 varying resistance levels. This can be toggled using the adjustment knob below the handlebars.

Keeping you informed about your speed, distance, time and calories burned is the LCD screen which is similar to the one on other exercise bikes. Moving the bike is a tad easier, thanks to its dual movable wheels.

The L NOW indoor cycling bike belongs to the same class of indoor cycling bikes as the JOROTO exercise bike. Both share similar features and honestly, choosing one for our category wasn’t really the easiest decision. The L NOW indoor bike is powered by a 22 lbs flywheel accompanied by the standard 8 level resistance. As usual, you’ll find the control knob placed in a vantage position for easy access during workouts.

There’s an LCD screen that displays workout data like speed, time, distance etc. The handlebars, on the other hand, are multi-grip – useful for various purposes depending on your workout. Again, it is important to mention that the seats are 4 way adjustable. Additionally, instead of a chain system, the bike uses a belt system on its pedals. The pedals are quite comfortable and fit perfectly.

Talk about assembling, and we tell you assembling the L NOW bike was a breeze out of the box. Just a few things to tighten here and there and you are done. The L NOW exercise bike is designed to support weights of up to 400lbs. It comes with wheels for easy movement from one position to another. We’re almost at the end of our review and we chose the L NOW Pro Indoor cycling bike as the best commercial exercise bike. Below, we’ve shared our experience with the bike.

First, we’d like to point out that the bike is designed for constant all day use, hence, the reason why it is tagged a commercial bike. This also implies that the bike is suitable for use in the gym or a fitness studio. It also explains why the bike costs a tad higher than the average bike of most of the exercise bikes on our list.

Secondly, the L NOW Pro Indoor bike comes with a massive 50 lbs flywheel. This ensures you have enough work to do when you’re exercising. In addition to that, there are 8 resistance levels on the bike, each level makes the workout tougher. The LCD screen displays your normal workout data in an easy to read format.

The bike’s height is easy to adjust. Furthermore, the seat is adjustable. Both adjustment features ensure the bike fits a variety of users. The pedals fit nicely and are comfortable – two team members tested the bike out for about an hour and didn’t complain of any bad effect of the pedals.

L NOW took time to work on the bike’s frame. This Pro model bike can support individual weighing up to 551lbs in contrast to the lesser model with a weight capacity of 400lbs.

Best Rated Exercise Bike

Best Rated Exercise Bike

Affordability - 91%

Portability - 92%
Resistance - 100%

Finally, we wrap up this review with the ASUNA indoor cycling bike. We really cannot explain why it’s so highly priced. However, it does have a few features which aren’t found on the other bikes on this review list.

The ASUNA exercise bike comes with a 33lbs flywheel. In addition to that, there is a heavy duty movable wheel which aids in the transportation of the bike from one location to the other. The maximum user weight supported by the drive is pegged at 330 lbs – quite disappointing considering the price tag.

On the other hand, we like the two bottle holders available on the bike’s body. One of it is placed behind the LCD screen so you’d have to lean a bit forward to reach it especially if you have short arms. The seats are adjustable and feel pretty much like a standard bicycle seat. However, the pedals make up for that deficit as they themselves are comfortable to the feet.

Adjusting the variable resistance levels – 8 in number – is easy. This increases your workout intensity and in turn, helps you build more strength.

View Main Features / Pros & Cons

Main Features

  • Water bottle holders can firmly hold 32oz water bottles.
  • Effectively weighted flywheel.
  • Adjustable seats for a more comfortable exercise.
  • Comfortable pedals.
  • Easy movement wheels.

  • The water bottle holders are a good addition.
  • It can support individuals weighing below 330 lbs.
  • The 33lb effectively weighted flywheel works effectively in tandem with the 8 resistance levels to give you the much-desired intensity.

  • It is expensive.

Best Exercise Bike Comparison Table

Consider the Following Factors When Shopping for the Best Exercise Bike

“Can I lose weight by riding a stationary bike?” is a quintessential example of a question we’ve seen people ask over and over again when you make mention of getting an exercise bike. To answer that question, we quoted M. L. Rose from this article she shared here.

She distinctly mentioned that “cycling is a great exercise that can take you a long way even though you’re in a spot”. Exercising on a stationary bike, therefore, is an essential workout for anyone that wants to work their cardiovascular systems. You can lose all the weight you want to just by only working out on a stationary bike. However, it is dependent on factors such as diet and cutting down your calorie intake which plays a big role.

In this article, we reviewed the best exercise bike for different exercise bike categories. The categories we reviewed include magnetic bikes, home bikes, etc.

Let’s have a look at some of the immense benefits of using an exercise bike.

Benefits Of Exercising On An Exercise Bike

There are tons of benefits one can derive simply by working out on an exercise bike. We take a look at some of them in this section of the article.

Lose Weight Easily

Aside from keeping fit, losing weight is the next chief reason why people exercise. Therefore, one of the first benefits you get for using an exercise bike is that you lose weight.

However, this is dependent on a number of factors such as the user’s weight, the amount of time they spent on the exercise bike as well as the number of calories they take in on a daily basis.

Statistics from experts show that one can burn as much as 620 calories by using an exercise bike. The amount of calories burned, however, depends on the intensity of your workout. For instance, you will burn more than 700 calories if you do a high-intensity workout.

Gentle On Your Joints

People who have done one sort of surgery or the other especially on the knee or ankle need constant workouts if they are going to recover quickly. One of the best ways to keep fit constantly is to exercise regularly. Exercises done on a stationary bike is typically gentle on the joints of the leg. As a matter of fact, exercise bikes offer low impact workouts recommended for people undergoing rehabilitation after surgery.

Great Cardio Exercise Option

Cardio exercises are great until you become bored of doing just one exercise. Then you switch from running to using a treadmill – and sooner than later, your body becomes accustomed to it and the workout has little or no effect anymore. This makes you start thinking of other cardio workout exercises.

However, if you interchanged your workout by running in the streets, using a treadmill, an elliptical machine, and an exercise bike you’ll never get bored of your workouts. In essence, an exercise bike adds variety to your workout.

Build your strength

Exercising on an exercise bike helps build strength especially in the lower part of the body. The exercise bike, like the elliptical machine, has options for adjusting resistance levels of the workout. By doing so, you increase workout intensity which in turn increases your strength.

Have you ever felt like exercising and watching your favorite Netflix show simultaneously? Or perhaps you prefer playing God of War PS4 and exercising at the same time? The exercise bike offers the much-needed convenience when you are working out. This means you can do a handful of activities simultaneously including reading a book, connecting with your friends and family on social media as well as watching movies, playing games, signing documents – the list is just endless.

Additionally, it saves you the stress of having to go to the gym always. That is if you have an exercise bike at home.

Strengthens your heart muscles

The heart is one of the many muscles in the body that benefits from workouts on an exercise bike. This stems from the fact that the heart gets to pump faster and the heartbeat increases while you are working out. As a result, your cardiorespiratory capacity is increased via such exercises. This, in turn, reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

It’s time to unveil the bikes we’ve selected. We’ll start our review by taking a look at the overall best exercise bike. Then, we’ll review other bikes under other categories.

The sheer number of exercise bikes and brands available in fitness shops can make one end up buying crap instead of an exercise bike. However, we intend to give you some pointers – important 411’s – on what you should know before buying an exercise bike.

Firstly, you should know the different types of exercise bikes.

The Different Types of an Exercise Bike

Without being told, a lot of people jump to the conclusion that there are only two types of exercise bikes. That’s an incomplete conclusion. In reality, there are 4 types of exercise bikes each having its own distinct features, advantages, and disadvantages. Furthermore, each bike is suitable for specific activities and for specific people.

  1. Upright exercise bikes
  2. Spin exercise bikes – also called indoor cycle bikes
  3. Recumbent exercise bikes
  4. Dual-action stationary bikes

Upright Exercise Bike

This is undoubtedly one of the most popular types of exercise bikes. Design-wise they look similar to road bicycles. The only differences being that the upright bike may have an LCD screen which is usually absent in a conventional bicycle. Moreover, most upright bikes don’t use chain wheels like bicycles.

Upright exercise bikes offer a great deal of comfort and convenience for users. They are easy to use and can be kept in a variety of locations because of their considerate size. Some of them are foldable and adjustable too. Besides, they can be used when sitting on the bike seat or standing. The only issue you will have with upright bikes are the seats which feel somewhat uncomfortable.

Spin Exercise Bikes

Spin exercise bikes are also called indoor cycles and they are the next closest bikes to the upright exercise bikes. However, they share more features with a real bicycle given the fact that they use a chain propelled pedaling system. Indoor cycle bikes are designed for intense workouts. Did we mention the seats can be a little bit uncomfortable too?

Recumbent Exercise Bikes

Recumbent exercise bikes are a must have for people concerned about comfort during workouts. The seats have backrests meaning you can relax whilst watching a Netflix episode and pedaling your way into fitness. They pack tons of features into recumbent exercise bikes. Some of the best recumbent exercise bikes don’t come with handlebars. Of course, you wouldn’t need one.

A recumbent exercise bike can cost two times the cost of an upright bike given that it comes with special features which may be lacking on the other bikes. The recumbent bike is suitable for people undergoing rehabilitation after knee or ankle surgery.

Dual-Action Exercise Bikes

These aren’t your everyday exercise bikes. They are a cross between an elliptical machine and an exercise bike. A dual-action exercise bike features a comfortable seat with backrest – as in the case of a recumbent bike. In addition, it comes with movable handlebars that help you exercise your upper body whilst pedaling and exercising your lower body.

Having known these bike types, let’s proceed to the next factor.

Type of Resistance

A quick look at some exercise bikes shows that there is an adjustment knob somewhere near the center console. This knob is used to control the bike’s resistance levels. From the review, we saw that most of the bikes had 8 resistance levels. There are 4 different resistance types found in exercise bikes. They include the following;

  1. Fan-based resistance
  2. Flywheel resistance
  3. Direct contact resistance.
  4. Magnetic resistance

Fan Based Resistance

Exercise bikes with fan-based resistance are not too common. A pulley system connects the bike’s pedals to a fan. The faster you pedal, the more resistance you feel as the blades of the fan encounter more air resistance. For first-timers, it may not be the most enjoyable save for the cool breeze from the fan that blows you during the workout.

Flywheel Resistance

A flywheel is usually heavy and the first few turns of the pedal are an uphill task. However, subsequent pedaling becomes much easier except when you apply resistance via a direct contact resistance.

Direct Contact Resistance

This involves the use of a standard bike’s braking system to cause resistance in the flywheel. In turn, this leads to a reduction in the rotational speed of the flywheel thus causing you to pedal more and then leading to an increased workout intensity. You can select a resistance level from the levels offered by the bike. Usually, you turn a knob to increase or decrease the resistance without having to stop your workout.

Magnetic Resistance

Lastly, we have the magnetic resistance. Magnetic resistance bikes use electromagnetic induction principles to cause resistance to occur in their wheels. The end result is an extremely quiet machine with fewer chances of wear and tear and a smooth workout.

How much are you willing to spend on the best exercise bike? There are tons of bikes that are affordable but lack quality. We, therefore, advise that you buy a bike for long-term usage except you intend to buy a bike every year. This, however, doesn’t mean that the best cheap exercise bikes or the best budget exercise bikes are not worth buying. Everything truly depends on you, your preferences, and the features of the bike. The more the features, the higher the price. For instance, if the bike has a high user weight capacity, a colored LCD screen, cupholders, and workout programs, then the price would significantly be high, to say the least.

Workout Programs

Inbuilt workout programs help users achieve their fitness goals. Some exercise bikes allow users to set their own custom programs. It is important to note that this feature isn’t as popular on exercise bikes as it is on elliptical bikes and treadmills.

Weight Limit

Before you buy an exercise bike, endeavor to check the maximum user weight supported by the bike. This will save you a lot of stress. Every exercise bike, no matter how strong and durable it looks, is designed to support individuals who weigh up to a certain number. The standard is between 250 lbs and 300 lbs. However, high-end exercise bikes can support individuals who weigh up to 500lbs. Moreover, it’s important to know that commercial exercise bikes have higher weight capacity than the non-commercial models.

Keep a weighing balance handy so users can check their weight size before climbing onto the bike.

Having an uncomfortable seat on your exercise bike can give you “workout-mares” – that’s of such a word exists. You get the point, don’t you? As we earlier mentioned, the best seats are found on recumbent exercise bikes, thanks to the adjustable backrest seats. However, you can buy new aftermarket seats if the one that came with your exercise bike makes you feel uncomfortable.

It’s a good thing to have an adjustable exercise bike. This ensures that individuals of different heights and sizes can comfortably use the bike with less stress. Try to look out for bikes with adjustable seats, body part, as well as height adjustments knob and pedal adjustment straps.

In conclusion

You don’t need a seer to help you pick the best exercise bike for yourself. Instead, you need more guides like this. We took time to cross check, test, and create our review of these exercise bikes before selecting the best amongst them.
